[News] Symposium: MEIS2015
 
 
 
The international symposium MEIS2015 aims at giving a unique venue where various issues in CG application fields are discussed by mathematicians, CG researchers and practitioners.
 
Through the previous conferences, MEIS2013 and MEIS2014, mathematicians as well as CG researchers have recognized that CG is a specific and practical activity derived from mathematical theories. Issues found in CG broaden the field of mathematics (and vice versa), and CG visualizes mathematical theories in an aesthetic way.In this year, we try to provoke interdisciplinary research projects through the peer-reviewed paper/poster presentations at the symposium.
 
Several invited talks will also attract and inspire prospective attendees who work in academia or industries having strong interests on digital media creations, scientific visualization and visual engineering.

[BOOK] Mathematical Basics of Motion and Deformation in Computer Graphics
 
 
This book presents an intuitive introduction to the mathematics of motion and deformation in computer graphics. Starting with familiar concepts in graphics, such as Euler angles, quaternions, and affine transformations, we illustrate that a mathematical theory behind these concepts enables us to develop the techniques for efficient/effective creation of computer animation.
 
This book, therefore, serves as a good guidepost to mathematics (differential geometry and Lie theory) for students of geometric modeling and animation in computer graphics. The symposium MEIS gives a unique venue where mathematicians, CG researchers, and those who work in industry gather to share and discuss their contemporary issues and future collaborative projects.
 
The first MEIS (MEIS2013) was a great success with a variety of subjects, such as character deformation/ animation, spherical harmonic lighting, fluid control, 2D/3D image analysis/synthesis, and visual illusion, as well as the outstanding invited speakers in computer graphics, vision, and digital production industry. This year MEIS will have more industry topics and deeper mathematics.
 
Several invited talks will also attract and inspire prospective attendees who work in academia or industries having strong interests on digital media creations, scientific visualization and visual engineering.

The book titled "Mathematical Progress in Expressive Image Synthesis I" has been published.
 
This book presents revised versions of the best papers selected from the symposium “Mathematical Progress in Expressive Image Synthesis” (MEIS2013) held in Fukuoka, Japan, in 2013. 3 members of Math for CG project have received "Prize for Science and Technology (Research Category)" of Commendation for Science and Technology by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology on their outstanding contributions to "Mathematical modeling on directable image synthesis".
 
The reception ceremony was held on Tuesday, April 15 at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) in Tokyo.

“Blendshape”, a simple linear model of facial expression, is the prevalent approach to realistic facial animation. It has driven animated characters in Hollywood films, and is a standard feature of commercial animation packages. The blendshape approach originated in industry, and became a subject of academic research relatively recently. This report describes the state of the art in this area, covering both literature from the graphics research community, and developments published in industry forums. We show that, despite the simplicity of the blendshape approach, there remain open problems associated with this fundamental technique.
